Ariane Friedrich in strong German Championships team

BERLIN — National champion and World leader Ariane Friedrich heads a athletes selected on Tuesday to represent Germany at next month IAAF World Championships.

Friedrich, who set a new German record of 2.06metres last month at the IAAF Golden League meeting in Berlin – the same venue that will host the championships – is among 74 athletes, including reigning Hammer and Discus throw champions Betty Heidler and Franka Dietzsch, named for considerations for the August 15-23 event.

The final team, which German athletics officials said will

ikely rise to 85 athletes, will be announced after the DAK Athletics Gala on 2 August.

"We have at the present time, all athletes nominated for the A-standard have been met," said German Athletics Federation Sports Director Juergen Mallow.

"We will not occupy all the disciplines, even if we could in theory as the host. It doesn’t make sense to nominate a record number of athletes who then don’t perform well," he added.
